Interview with Marcus Welker

I chose to interview Marcus Welker, Projects Coordinator for the Center for Sustainability Education at Dickinson College, in order to gain a better perspective of engaging in and initiating change. By asking the following questions, I was able to attain new knowledge of how to be a leader and what characteristics it takes to motivate people and change.

1. What is your personal philosophy on leadership? How do you apply it to your workplace?

  • Enable others to feel empowered

  • Lead from background

  • Give others the ability to take the reigns and receive feedback from him

  • Feels comfortable when others lead and he can oversee the actions

    • Provides a sense of freedom

  • Likes to create a balance with his students

2. What is one characteristic every leader should possess?

  • Humbleness

  • Affirmation—telling his workers they’re doing a good job, positive reinforcement

3. What are you doing to ensure you continue to grow and develop as a leader?

  • Practice

  • Reflect and share experiences

  • Professionally, he is doing stuff such as attending a sustainability conference where he reviews various proposals

    • Takes it one step further to look and read these proposals

  • Taking a course on becoming a better bike instructor

  • Personally, he practices leadership qualities on a daily basis

4. What advice do you have for someone going into a leadership position for the first time?

  • Set clear guidelines

    • Trello

  • Setting guidelines helps establish what he expects and also opens on communication with workers

    • More comfortable assessing the feasibility of tasks and working with workers to create realistic guidelines

  • Practice—he was really big on practicing leadership

    • Don’t be afraid to fail
